Ever since childhood Brian had fantasized about being a writer. He had a brilliant way with words and caught the attention of several publications at an early age. During college, two of his stories were published in well-known magazines and he even won a prestigious short story contest.

Despite this early promise and his obvious talent, Brian drifted away from writing after graduating. He took a series of temporary telemarketing jobs to pay the rent and, although he had plenty of good story ideas, found he was too tired after work to write them down. Most nights he just flopped onto his couch and fell asleep in front of the TV. Over the next few years several of his girlfriends encouraged him to give up his day job and focus his energy on his passion—they pleaded with him to write. But Brian felt over-pressured by their enthusiasm; he didn’t know how to respond so he did nothing and eventually each relationship just fizzled out.

On his 26th birthday Brian came to see me for a consultation. He was frustrated at his inability to get started in his chosen career, and was increasingly worried that both his life and his dream of being a writer were passing him by.

“All I want to do is be a writer, Ghanshyam,” he told me. “I know I can do it, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening for me. I can’t bring my ideas to life on paper, let alone keep a relationship alive. My career and my love life are going nowhere.”

The prints I took of Brian’s palm gave me a pretty good notion of the root of his problem.

He indeed possessed the hand of a writer, displaying a truly impressive head line and a strong intuition line that indicated a deep intellect guided by an innate and profound insight into the human condition. Unfortunately, his head line was enmeshed in a massive web of intricately woven interference lines. These types of interference lines are often found in a hand that is finely textured with a skin consistency that is very soft to the touch. A fine texture and soft consistency frequently reflect a sensitive, kind and empathetic nature, but can also indicate we lack the fire and passion to get things done.

Consistency

I pressed my thumb into Brian’s palm—the simple action left a dent in his skin that did not immediately bounce back. The lack of resiliency confirmed what the prints had told me: Brian had a good and gentle nature but lacked the fortitude, motivation or staying power to tackle the demands of a writing career—or the demands of a committed relationship.

“Let me ask you something about yourself, Brian . . . and please answer honestly,” I said. “When it comes to work or love, do you find you would rather go with the flow and stick with the status quo than test yourself and work hard to get what you want?”

Brian sighed. “I think you hit the nail on the head Ghanshyam. It’s not that I’m lazy—I just prefer being comfortable. I know my attitude is holding me back, but I can’t seem to shake off this sense of lethargy.”

“Well, let’s see if we can do that together,” I said. “You have the natural genius and talent to be a great writer—but all these crisscrossing interference lines are forcing you to use your head line improperly. You use it to make excuses instead of making things happen, you daydream instead of applying yourself, you waver instead of committing and you procrastinate instead of acting. Getting rid of those interference lines will help forge the attitude you need to develop your gifts and put them into motion. And once you’ve accomplished that, your writing career and your love life will begin to take shape.”

I designed a program of meditation and yoga for Brian to develop his powers of concentration and his physical stamina. He began showing great improvement in just a matter of weeks and had started writing short stories again. Sadly, in an effort to save money, he moved in with his brother, a no-nonsense criminal lawyer who didn’t understand meditation and had no patience for yoga. He gave Brian an ultimatum: abandon palmistry or leave his house.

When making major changes in ourselves, it is critical to have the support and encouragement of those we love and rely on. Brian was on the verge of making his dream a reality, but had not developed enough resilience to do it on his own. Instead he chose to quit yoga and meditation in order to remain in the comfort of his brother’s home. As far as I know, he never wrote again.

Rahu in Leo / Ketu in Aquarius

With the holidays truly over and all those New Year’s resolutions we made staring us in the face, it might be a good time to take stock of what we’ve accomplished, where we are, and exactly where we’re heading—or should be heading.

And there is no better cosmic mirror for providing an honest assessment of our past, present and future than the shadow planets of Rahu and Ketu.

Rahu and Ketu represent our karmic bank balance—a tally of the lessons we’ve learned and still need to learn as we journey through this life and from one reincarnated lifetime to the next. The ultimate destination of every soul is freedom from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. We can only reach this destination by freeing ourselves of the illusion that fulfillment can be found in the finite, material world. Rahu and Ketu help us achieve that goal by reminding us of the steps we have already taken and the steps we have yet to take in order to be liberated from this illusion.

Ketu represents our past, the foundation upon which we build our present, and Rahu represents our present environment and how we can develop it into a positive future. For the past 12 months Rahu has been in Leo and Ketu has been in Aquarius, where they will remain until October of this year.

So, what are Rahu and Ketu telling us right now? Well, Ketu in Aquarius relates to the humanistic sign of the water bearer, urging us to be philanthropic, altruistic and acquire a more humanitarian world vision. Rahu in Leo reveals the need for us to share that humanitarian vision with the world—an effort that will benefit everyone. In short, this karmic placement calls on us to widely relay Aquarian wisdom through the creative energies of Leo.

But this is more easily said than done. Rahu in the sign of Leo, the proud lion, feels the need to bask in the light of its own uniqueness and creativity and not to share the stage with others. Therefore, the great challenge during this particular Ketu-Rahu alignment is to balance our self-interest with our concern for others—an exaggerated sense of self can jeopardize even the noblest of intentions and rack up negative karma.

So, whatever New Year resolutions we may have set for ourselves—be it losing weight or getting a pay raise—Ketu and Rahu are telling us our real resolution should be to become better and more humane individuals and help others do the same. These are the lessons we need to learn during this transit—learning them will not only benefit the wider world, it will help balance our karmic ledger and place us that much closer to freeing our souls.

Ketu and Rahu change signs approximately every 18 months—so you have until October 9th to do all you can to master the lessons you’ve been assigned in this current transit.

Want to know where Ketu and Rahu are in your chart and what they have to teach you personally? Give us a call at 866-428-3799 or click here for a consultation. We are here to help.

Cynthia was a dynamic and dedicated therapist who devoted her life to helping autistic children communicate with the world. The intensity of her heartfelt, loving approach was innovative and highly effective, allowing her to interact with kids that society had all but written off. The deep emotional connection she made with her young patients brought smiles to their faces and garnered the respect and praise of parents and peers.

Her professional success stemmed from Cynthia’s deeply loving nature and hyper-focused energy, a combination that enabled her to direct every ounce of her love exclusively to her patients. Ironically, this same combination wreaked havoc in her personal life and eventually, nearly destroyed her career.

Cynthia had been a client of mine for several years and was so impressed with palmistry that she incorporated many of its aspects into her own work, sometimes even using the the children’s handprints to design treatment programs. Unfortunately, she ignored what her own handprints reflected about herself, particularly in regards to her Mount of Venus—the concentrated source of her powerful, caring energy and the foundation of her professional success.

Consistency

There are ten mounts in the hand, each providing a window into the health of a particular aspect of our life. The Mount of Venus (the raised pad of flesh below the thumb) represents our ability to love and be loved. A balanced mount is pliant and resilient to the touch; it will give in and quickly spring back into place when pressed—this tells us we can give and receive love in equal and healthy measure. However, Cynthia’s Mount of Venus was rigid, hard and unyielding—an indication that she had built a protective shell around her heart due to a past emotional hurt, and that she was passionate to the point of obsession. It explained to me why Cynthia was so single-minded when it came to work, but had remained romantically single well into middle age.

When it came to the children, Cynthia had no expectations—she wasn’t upset when they couldn’t (and didn’t) return her love. But in her personal life, she had very high expectations of others—a demanding attitude that destroyed a brief marriage when she was in her early twenties. Now in her early fifties, she was lonely and wanted someone to share her life with. I cautioned her that her dominant, rigid Mount of Venus, could make any romantic relationship she entered untenable, that the obsessive intensity of her affection would push potential suitors away and ultimately threaten her own mental stability. I encouraged her to seek a more balanced emotional life by consciously extending the type of unconditional love she showered on her patients into all her relationships.

Unfortunately, compulsiveness is part and parcel of a rigid Venus and Cynthia didn’t heed my advice. Sure enough, the obsessive nature that had served her well when focusing on her patients, proved disastrous when she met Al. Cynthia convinced herself that Al was her soul-mate. Al, however, did not feel the same way; he was in the middle of a difficult divorce and not interested in becoming deeply involved with her. Nevertheless, Cynthia made him the focus of her life—her rigid Venus pushed her to blindly direct the love she had always reserved for her patients onto Al. But unlike her relationship with her patients, Cynthia demanded and expected Al to reciprocate. She was incapable of considering his own needs and feelings. When Al abruptly broke off their short-lived and one-side romance, she fell into a crippling depression; she began ignoring her work duties, her patients and her personal health and hygiene. Her performance became so poor at the clinic that she was fired. She stopped eating, couldn’t sleep and seldom left her home. In just a matter of months she lost all she had achieved and was a shadow of her former self.

Fortunately, she did not give up on palmistry, and palmistry did not give up on her. Over the course of two years Cynthia and I worked to develop greater flexibility in her Venus Mount by shifting her focus to a wider, spiritual horizon. We began with daily recitation of Gayatri and Shiva Mantras, created a greater self-awareness with regular meditation and dissolved her long-held tension and emotional trauma through frequent deep-tissue massage. Eventually she was able she let go of her obsession with Al, rebuild her career and enjoy a far happier and healthier lifestyle. Balancing her Mount of Venus allowed her to love everyone in her life unconditionally, to love herself and to find peace of mind.

Venus in Pisces: January 26th to May 30th

It may be the dead of winter, but a current alignment of planets could soon be warming our hearts!

Venus—the planet of love, relationships, creativity and beauty—entered the mystical water sign of Pisces on January 26th. This is a most welcome transit and one that, happily, will be with us for an extended period. Venus normally moves in and out of a sign in roughly 30 days, but thanks to a unique set of planetary conditions, it will remain in Pisces until the end of May.

Venus is exalted in Pisces, which simply means that, in Pisces, Venus’s best qualities radiate most powerfully and impact us most beneficially. This Venus-Pisces combination provides a major boost to all forms of interpersonal relationships; it allows us to feel and express love and devotion with a greater degree of truth, depth and compassion. The positive emotional power generated by this celestial aspect makes it an ideal time for connecting with the people we care about, and those we would like to care about. (Don’t forget that Valentine’s Day occurs during this transit!)

Venus in Pisces offers us a unique opportunity to make the world a better place by using its energy to practice love and compassion in all we do, and by being of service to others. When we act with love and kindness we inspire others to do the same.

This is also an excellent time for expressing creativity in every field, whether we choose to do so by championing a worthwhile cause or by expressing ourselves artistically. If you have never been involved in the arts but have always wanted to be, now would be the time to act upon your creative impulses. Search for a project that excites you, find a mentor or sign up for a course in something that will connect you with your passion.

On a cautionary note, feelings of nostalgia can run high during a Venus-Pisces transit—so be careful not to waste this cosmic gift by drifting into fantasy, or escaping into dreamy expectations that might frustrate or crush you when reality kicks in. Make the most of every moment by connecting to what and who you love with both your heart and your eyes wide open. Make your feelings count by ensuring they are real and honest. As always, the surest way to achieve this is by communicating with your higher self (or higher power) through yoga and meditation. Emotion is always most authentic and long-lasting when rooted in devotion.

If you woke up at dawn this morning with an overpowering urge to cock-a-doodle-doo, there is no need to panic—today is Chinese New Year and marks the beginning of the Year of The Rooster.

In a 12-year cycle of Chinese astrology, the 12 signs of the zodiac are represented by different animals. The year of The Rooster—the tenth sign of the Chinese zodiac—most closely corresponds to Jupiter in Virgo in the Vedic system.

Overall, the message for the Year of The Rooster is to keep focused on the big picture. Pay attention to the details, but don’t let them bog you down or sidetrack you from long-term goals. The same holds true for the way in which we view ourselves—don’t become so preoccupied with your own concerns that you fail to hear what others are telling you. Be expansive of spirit—don’t be critical or take offense at insignificant slights.

This can be a challenging year both emotionally and career-wise, but it can also be a year of good fortune if restraint, patience and common sense are regularly practiced. Think before you speak, double check your facts before making assertions and don’t needlessly complicate situations that are simple and straightforward.

Most importantly—enjoy the New Year!

Charles came to see me not long after being betrayed by the person he most loved and trusted.

“How could my own father do this to me, Guylaine? How could he stab me in the back?”

Charles came from a long line of successful entrepreneurs and his family owned and operated factories in both Canada and the United States. As the only son, he had groomed him from an early age to take a leading role in the business. Shortly after earning his MBA, his dad made Charles a senior vice president in charge of operations.

It was a role Charles accepted enthusiastically and with gratitude. He’d never been happier, and within months had introduced new business models and technical innovations that dramatically boosted both productivity and profits. However, instead of being proud of his son, Charles’s father felt threatened—he fired Charles and replaced him with Charles’s younger sister.

“I will never, ever forgive my father for what he’s done to me—not as long as I live. He betrayed me, humiliated me and ruined my career. Who will hire someone whose been fired by his own dad?” Charles said. He was trembling with rage as I took his first set of handprints.

I saw that his destiny line was quite short and unpronounced—suggesting that something was blocking him from achieving his life’s purpose. I suspected that “something” was the bitterness he held toward his father.

I prepared Charles’s Vedic birth chart to get a clearer picture of what was going on between him and his father.

Charles chart“Look at this, Charles,” I said, pointing to his Ninth House. “The Ninth house reflects both our good fortune and our relationship with the important teachers and mentors in our lives—beginning with our fathers. Saturn rules your Ninth House and, luckily, Saturn is in Taurus in your First House. This is very auspicious because it brings all the good fortune of the Ninth House into your First House, the house that symbolizes our personality and purpose in life. But Saturn is also the planet that assigns us deep, and sometimes very difficult, spiritual lessons. Because Saturn is in your First House, relating to the Ninth House of father, your chart is telling me that your father has a big role to play in your life, and in your spiritual development.”

Charles looked at me blankly, then said. “My father is dead to me—I will never forgive him and never let him play a role in my life.”

The vehemence of his statement didn’t surprise me; in addition to Saturn, Charles had Mars—an enemy of Saturn—in his First House, which helped explain the rift between father and son. He had Taurus—the stubborn bull—in his First House as well, contributing to his inflexible attitude.

I sighed. “Listen Charles, the lines in our hands, and the planets in our chart do not seal our fate—they are tools we can use to shape and improve our future. Your hand and chart tell me that your father has a lot to teach you about life, and about yourself—it’s up to you to open yourself to those lessons.

“I can’t be open to him—not after the pain he’s caused me,” Charles said resolutely.

“Your father’s actions and attitudes are his karma, which he will have to deal with . . . your karma will largely be determined by how you react to the way he’s treated you. I suggest you try to understand him, love him and forgive him. It is the only way for you to move forward in life—focusing on what he did or didn’t do to you will only lead to more anger and frustration.”

“I don’t think I can get past this,” Charles said, but agreed to come back for a series of coaching sessions. Over the course of two years I persuaded him to begin a regular meditation practice and take up yoga. This helped him delve deeply into his own heart and perceive what was truly important and good in himself and others. Eventually he let go of his resentment toward his father, found a great job, fell in love and began raising children of his own.

“I finally saw that my intense desire to prove myself in business was likely triggered my father’s actions,” Charles told me during our last session. “Once I took responsibility for my own actions, I was able to understand and forgive his . . . to open myself to love and to get on with my life. You were right, Guylaine—my dad has played a great role in my life. He has taught me how to love and forgive, and that put me on the path to happiness.”

Years later, after his sister secretly sold her share of the business, Charles’s father lost control of his company and was fired by the new owners. He came to see Charles complaining about his daughter’s betrayal, claiming that he couldn’t understand, and would never forgive her or get over his anger. Charles comforted and counseled his dad with love and kindness, inviting him and his sister to family dinners every week, ultimately making peace between them and reuniting the family.

Charles’ final set of handprints reflected the great changes in his attitude, outlook and life. His destiny line had become stronger and longer—telling me that he had found, and was happily following, his true purpose. He had also developed a rare poorva punya line, one of the most auspicious signs in palmistry, signifying that he had gained great fortune as a result of virtuous deeds.

Mars in Pisces: January 18th, 2017

If you feel you’re still suffering from a holiday hangover—don’t blame it on an excess of Christmas turkey or too much tippling on New Year’s Eve. Even before the festive season began, we were all stuck in an uncomfortable cosmic gridlock known as a Kala Sarpa Yoga—a topsy-turvy cosmic alignment with all the planets bunched together on one side of the Rahu-Ketu nodal axis.

Kala Sarpa Yogas are notorious for giving us a one-sided view of the world, stirring up intense emotions, creating interpersonal friction and causing feelings of loneliness and isolation. It can be a very emotionally draining aspect, especially at a time when we are drawing on all our energies to tackle the challenges of the burgeoning new year.

Luckily, Mars, the noble warrior planet, is coming to the rescue! On Wednesday, January 18th Mars broke away from the pack of tightly knotted planets and entered Pisces—in doing so it single-handedly shattered the Kala Sarpa Yoga.

Mars entering Pisces is good news for all of us. Mars a very close friend of Jupiter and flourishes in Jupiter-ruled Pisces. In Vedic astrology Jupiter is referred to as the “Guru” or “dispeller of darkness” and considered the most expansive, benefic planet in the solar system. Jupiter bestows wisdom, luck, respect, generosity, justice, and a deep sense of spirituality. And while it is in Pisces, Mars will absorb and be directed by Jupiter’s many beneficent attributes, which will enhance its own positive characteristics of courage, bravery, energy and passion. The Jupiter effect will soften Mars’ rough warrior edges, rendering its combative nature into that of the vigilant and conscientious peace keeper, guiding its forceful energy toward civility, graciousness, compassion, spiritual vitality, and spurring it to fight for worthy and charitable causes.

Pisces is the sign of mystical awareness and devotion. So as Mars travels through Pisces over the next several weeks, it will embrace the role of disciplined spiritual soldier, making this an ideal time for us to channel that powerful Mars energy into our own devotional practices. Adopting the fierce intensity of Mars can be unsettling at first, but if we direct that passion to our hearts to make a spiritual connection, the benefits to our lives and our souls will be incalculable.

Mars will be in Pisces until February 28th, so please use this period wisely—find the time to reflect on what matters most to you, commune with nature, pray to your higher power, meditate and practice yoga. Devote yourself to being devoted.

Let us help you get the most benefit from this important Mars transit and show you how it is affecting you own astrological chart. Give us a call at 866-428-3799, or book a consultation by clicking here. We’re here to help.

A few years ago my long-time client Judith lost her 36-year-old daughter to cancer. As with many parents who outlive their children, Judith was racked with guilt over her daughter’s death.

“I must have failed her in someway . . . I must have done something wrong . . . I was a bad mother to her,” Judith sobbed during one of our consultations more than a year after her daughter’s funeral. Despite the passage of time, she was shrouded in darkness—her self-torment clouded her eyes and was etched onto the palm of her non-dominant hand.

The non-dominant hand—the hand we do not use to write with—represents our subconscious self and often reflects feelings and emotions we have deeply internalized . . . emotions that can harm or cripple us if not dealt with.

Studying Judith’s handprints, I saw that her non-dominant heart line had shriveled since her daughter’s passing. This told me she had shut herself off from feeling or expressing love—she had filled her heart with guilt and there was room for nothing else. Her situation worsened over the next year and I grew concerned for her mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Grieving over the loss of her child was normal and healthy, but closing down her heart and turning away from the world for so long was destructive.

It was nearing Christmas, which I knew would be a particularly difficult time for Judith. I encouraged her to combat her guilt by meditating as often and as deeply as possible—to focus on the love she held for her daughter and her daughter’s love for her.

“We have to grow your heart line again, Judith, or this guilt could consume you—heal yourself through meditating on the love you two shared . . . the bond you continue to share.”

Three months later Judith returned for another consultation—I was delighted to see that her tears and torment were gone and the light had returned to her eyes.

“What happened, Judith?” I asked, applying ink to her palms to take a fresh set of handprints.

She smiled, and told me she had followed my advice and had started meditating daily.

“At first the same dark thoughts kept running through my mind, “she said. `It’s my fault she died . . . I brought her into this world and I should have protected her . . . I was a bad mother; I was a bad mother!’ This went on for a few weeks.

“Then on Christmas morning a miracle happened. I began to meditate, but this time as soon as the thought ‘I was a bad mother’ popped into my head, the shelf holding my statue of Buddha collapsed behind me with a loud bang. I turned around and saw an envelope fluttering to the floor—I had tucked it behind the statue years before and completely forgotten about it . . . it was a letter from my daughter. The first line read, Mom you are such a good mother to me—I can never thank you enough for all you’ve done for me. I love you so much! A huge sense of relief flooded my heart; at that moment I vowed to no longer live in doubt and guilt, but in love and hope. I looked inward to reach out to my daughter, and I found her . . . or she found me.”

When Judith finished her story we looked at her new handprints and were amazed to see that, in just three months, the heart line in her non-dominant hand had regrown and now stretched across the breadth of her palm.

I will never forget Judith’s Christmas miracle story and the way palmistry helped her reconnect with her heart. And I will never underestimate the power of love to heal our suffering.

A major cosmic shift is underway that will dramatically affect all our lives into early 2020.

On January 13th Saturn, the slow moving planetary giant embodying discipline, duty and self-awareness, completed it’s 2 ½-year sojourn in Scorpio and entered into Sagittarius—the auspicious 9th sign of the zodiac.

Saturn is the personification of the Lord of Karma—it casts an unflinching light on our past (and past life) deeds and illuminates the aspects of ourselves most in need of attention, repair and development. While our personal natal chart dictates the exact areas of our individual lives Saturn wants us to focus on, Saturn’s three-year presence in Sagittarius is of great significance to each and every one of us.

Saturn is a strict and formidable taskmaster; if we learn the lessons we need to learn, the next few years will present great opportunities and rewards that will be deeply gratifying and potentially life-changing. However, if we choose to ignore those lessons, we will likely encounter some dire challenges, painful circumstances and difficult times.

So, what are the lessons Saturn expects us to learn while it is in Sagittarius? Well, Sagittarius is all about transparency, veracity, wisdom, faith, exploration and the search for divine knowledge, so first and foremost, we must learn to be honest with ourselves and with others. Falsehood, deception and self-delusion should be avoided at all costs and entirely rooted out of our consciousness during this Saturn-Sagittarian transit. Our mission for the next three years—if we choose to accept it—is to be truthful in all our dealings, to confront our personal deficits honestly, develop our higher selves and buttress our faith in a higher power.

Sagittarius is a mutable sign ruled by beneficent and expansive Jupiter, making this an excellent time for engaging in higher education, exploring philosophical principles, embarking on an inner spiritual journey through meditation, becoming more flexible in body and mind by practicing yoga or tai chi, or broadening our horizons by learning a new language or a creative art—anything, as long as it ignites our hearts and helps us to help others with our accumulated knowledge and wisdom.

Saturn can be a very tough teacher, but working together with auspicious Sagittarius and fortune-shaping Jupiter, it can make miracles happen. If we are prepared to listen with an open, honest and willing heart to what Saturn in Sagittarius is telling us, the truth will set us free.
